Architectural Plotting & Presentation Printing Guide
Whether you are pinning up for GSAPP midterms, preparing for final studio reviews in Avery Hall, or assembling presentation boards, clean, high-resolution printing is essential. High-stakes presentations require sharp line weights, accurate color rendering, and durable materials. This guide covers file preparation, material selection, and ordering tips for architectural plots and presentation prints.
Essential Large-Format Printing Options
- CAD & Vector Line Plotting: Precision printing for architectural plans, elevations, sections, and site maps with clear linework and hatching.
- Presentation Boards & Foam Core Mounting: High-density full-color prints mounted on white or black foam board, ready for display.
- Translucent & Overlay Prints: Vellum and overlay options for site analysis and multi-layered architectural diagrams.
Paper Stocks & Material Options
Choosing the right substrate depends on whether you need quick draft check plots or vibrant, review-ready presentation prints. Our maximum continuous paper roll width is 42 inches, allowing prints up to 42" by whatever length your presentation requires.
| Material | Features | Recommended Uses |
|---|---|---|
| Plain Paper | 20lb Standard Bond | Draft check plots, black & white line drawings, working sets, and grayscale CAD files. |
| Heavyweight Matte | Coated Bright-White Finish | High-resolution CAD plans, color linework, site maps, and crisp vector diagrams. |
| Synthetic Matte ★ Most Popular / Favored Option | Tear-resistant & water-resistant. Polypropylene stock where colors pop with rich saturation and sharp contrast. | Final review presentations, rollable posters, travel-ready plots, and presentation prints that withstand heavy handling without creasing. |
File Preparation Checklist
Follow these steps to ensure your files print accurately without delays or formatting errors:
- Export to Print-Ready PDF: Always supply flattened PDF files rather than native CAD, 3D modeling, or vector files.
- Rasterize Complex Vector Patterns: Dense line hatches and gradient fills can slow down printing software. Flatten or rasterize heavy layers before exporting.
- Verify Output Dimensions & Roll Limits: Our maximum roll width is 42 inches, so your document can be printed 42" by whatever length you need (e.g., 36" x 48", 42" x 60", 42" x 96", or custom continuous lengths).
- Color Profiles (RGB vs. CMYK): Submit files in RGB color mode for large-format plots and posters to maximize color pop and vibrancy. Use CMYK for small-format prints (13" x 19" and smaller).
